Dear Little S...

Little S,

Your Dad and I are so excited to meet you!  Your due date was two days ago, but I guess you are way too cozy in there:)  I will have to lay off the treats I guess.  My body hasn't quite figured out the labor thing yet, but this Sunday, October 28th, we will go in and help it along.  Momma doesn't know if she can handle these on-off contractions much longer:(  The Dr. says you sound healthy and strong and you are growing like a weed!
These last nine months have been incredibly for our little family.  You will never know how much we already love you and how we have hoped, wished, dreamed, and prayed about you.  Maybe someday when you have a little one of your own, (if we ever let you date that is) you will understand what our love for you is like.  You have already changed our lives for the better and you aren't even here yet!
We can't wait to see your chubby cheeks, feel your spirit, learn your personality, kiss your toes and most of all, have you in our arms where we know you are okay.
So sweet girl, soak up these last 2.5 days, because I know I am.

Love, Momma

Weeks 33 & 34

(I'm a slacker, almost 35 weeks and now just posting for the last two weeks...)

How far along?: 34 Weeks!
Weight gain/loss: No more weight gain as of yesterday, still up 19lbs...maybe pumpkin chocolate chip cookies are healthy?!
Symptoms:  If you knew me in High School, you would know that I hurt my back pretty good and I had to sit out most of my Junior year.  I always knew that my back would be weakened once I got pregnant, and that weak back came back to haunt me in full force this week:(  I have had 3 nights in a row of no sleep (Josh too:( ) and quite frankly, I cannot wait to meet with my chiropractor tomorrow morning.  Hopefully he can fix me up because I definitely cannot function the last 5 weeks of this pregnancy like this...The doc said yesterday that Little S is breech again which means it would probably be uncomfortable for her to be head down and her being breech just puts more pressure on my back, so I am willing to try almost anything to get myself put back together so the sweet babe will go head down again.  So, to make a long story longer, the reason why I look like a trainwreck in the above picture is because I am functioning on just a couple hours of sleep...anybody want to hang out at 3am? ;)
Maternity clothes?:  Tops and tummy sleeve!
How is the sleep?:  Nonexistent...more nonexistent than if Little S herself were here:(  At least in a few weeks she can keep me company right?!
Best moment this week?:  Going to our birthing class, registering at our hospital and finding out that they do, in fact, have a really good NICU...whoever started the rumor that they didn't is clearly mistaken:(
Told family and friends?: Yes
Miss anything?: Sleep. In any form...
Movement?:  Still lots, she is probably getting so squished though:(
Cravings?: Pumpkin chocolate chip cookies...my goodness...
Anything make you queasy or sick?:  Being hungry!
Have you started to show yet?:  Yes
Gender:  Sweet baby GIRL!
Any labor signs?: Braxton Hicks, they are so much fun...
Belly button in or out?: Out, in every sense of the word!
Any "pregnancy" moments?:  Nesting and organizing the nursery like CRAZY!
Looking forward to: My date with the chiropractor tomorrow morning!  Baby shower in a couple weeks, and meeting our Little S!

How far along?: 33 Weeks!
Weight gain/loss: Up 19lbs. total as of a week ago
Symptoms: Achy back, ribs and hips, heartburn that comes and goes
Maternity clothes?:  Still no pants and I really don't want to buy any at this point...
How is the sleep?: Sleep is good!
Best moment this week?: Crafting for the nursery, I'll post more about that later this week!
Told family and friends?:  Yes
Miss anything?: Breathing and moving normally:)
Movement?:  Lots and lots!  Still hiccups several times a day, this girl is going to have some strong lungs!
Cravings?: Fruit, chocolate milk, pretty much anything these days;)
Anything make you queasy or sick?:  Not really, feeling pretty good!
Have you started to show yet?:  Yes
Gender:  Sweet baby GIRL!
Any labor signs?: Nothing serious:)
Belly button in or out?: Out and I am convinced if it had seams, it would split there!
Any "pregnancy" moments?:  Researching which kind of laundry detergent to use for Little S.  Who knew it was such a big deal?
Looking forward to:  Our birthing class this weekend!

Feeling so BLESSED.

There aren't any words right now to express how blessed our little family feels.

At our 17 week ultrasound, there were a couple things our Little S was in a bad position for the techs to see like a couple views of her heart, gender, and her sweet top lip to rule out cleft lip and heart defects.  So, they scheduled us to come back at 28 weeks, four weeks ago.

I went to that ultrasound alone, not really worried about the things they needed to rule out and saw her beautiful heartbeat, found out that she was, in fact, still a girl, and saw her sweet top lip.  I went home on cloud nine:)

Then the next day, I missed a call from my Dr.'s office, called them back and expected to hear from the wonderful nurses that everything looked great.  My heart sank when a nurse answered and said "Dr. Hall will be just a minute, can you hold?"  I squeaked out a "yes" and couldn't help but start to panic.  I didn't know what he would say, but I knew that if everything had looked good, I wouldn't need to talk to him.  When he came on the line he explained that our little girl looked great and measured right on track, but that my amniotic fluid levels were on the low end.  Low meaning 0.3 cm away from bedrest...He told me to take it easy, relax, everything would probably be just fine, drink lots of water and he would get us in for another ultrasound after my next appointment.  Not exactly what this hormonal Momma needed to hear...

I called my Mom after I got off the phone. She has had her share of phone calls with that very same Dr. and knows what that feels like. She assured me that everything would be okay, that Little S would be just fine and suggested that Josh and my Dad give me a blessing.

We went over that night and I have never felt such overwhelming comfort wash over me as I did after my Dad and Josh laid their hands on my head.  I knew that things were going to be okay, that no matter what, our little girl was going to be okay.  What a blessing it is to have the priesthood in our lives.

So the last four weeks, I have been making an extra effort to hydrate myself and take things slow.  There have been a few nights that I would just cry like a crazy woman to my sweet husband that life was hard enough as is and as a mother, I should be able to provide a healthy body for our little girl so she wouldn't have to struggle the first days and weeks of life.  I felt my first dose of "Momma guilt."  I was worried that with low fluid levels, her lungs wouldn't develop properly, or she wouldn't be strong and healthy at birth.  I felt like I was already failing at motherhood.  Sounds silly doesn't it?  But I was so worried...so hormonal yes, but so so worried.

Then, Tuesday arrived and once again, I felt that calm comforting feeling come over me.

I got the nicest ultrasound tech, the same one that did our first ultrasound at 11 weeks and our last ultrasound at 28.  She was so sweet and helpful the whole time, explaining things, calming my nerves and telling me that from what she could tell, my fluid levels were higher, YAY!

Little S was doing lots and lots of tricks for us.  Putting her whole hand in her mouth, sticking out her tongue, taking practice breaths so we could see her little lungs filling up and then "breathing out."  The tech said that was a really good sign to see those breaths, and my Momma guilt turned into Momma pride:)  I was so proud of our little girl for taking those breaths and showing me that she was, in fact, going to be okay!

She now weighs a whopping 4lbs. 1oz., is FINALLY head down (let's keep it that way!) and measures exactly on with her due date!

My wonderful Dr. called Tuesday night to tell me that everything looked good, my fluid levels were up and in the safe zone.

What. A. Blessing.

This means we still have options as to where we will deliver our sweet little girl.  The hospital I would love to deliver at doesn't have a NICU, so as long as we go to term (5 1/2 weeks away!), and my fluid levels stay up, we still feel comfortable delivering there!  Another blessing.  This also means that we have a higher chance of taking our baby girl home with us when we leave the hospital, and in turn, no NICU stays.  Another blessing.

So the plan now is to keep myself good and hydrated and let our sweet Little S cook as long as she can.  Josh and I feel so blessed and thankful that our little girl is doing well and that she is healthy.  I know throughout life she will struggle, struggling is good.  I also know that those struggling moments in her life are what will make her a strong woman someday.  If I can give her a strong and healthy body so she doesn't have to struggle to survive after birth, then I would like to think I am already doing okay as a Momma.  I couldn't ask for more.

Our hearts are so full of gratitude that Tuesday's ultrasound went well and we are still in awe that we have been chosen to raise our sweet little girl.  She is truly a miracle and a blessing in our lives!  The time is flying, and before we know it, she will be here!

Now for some pictures:

Her sweet profile:)

In this next one, we saw her moving around and the tech said: "oh my gosh, OH MY GOSH!"
I asked what she was doing and she rewound the video and explained that she is putting her whole hand in her mouth!  Gah!  I asked if that was normal (because that was my first reaction...) and she said "well, I guess it's not going to hurt anything, but I haven't seen a baby do that I don't think!"  Way to go Little S!  Show us your tricks;)  She then proceeded to do it 4 more times for us!

And my "paint" version of what she was doing...to make it comprehensive :)

And her sweet profile in 3D

Those lips need some kissin' ;)
And my very favorite:

Her hand is up by her face, and her big chubby cheeks are squishing her eyes closed:)
Josh and I are biased, but we think that our little girl is the absolute cutest there is!
We love her so much!

When we were getting the 3D pictures, the tech said "Good grief, you are going to have one cute baby!  I don't say that to just anybody!"  My Momma pride swelled all over again:)

It is still incredible to me how much you can love someone you haven't even met, but as the weeks go on, Josh and I fall in love with her even more!
So today, we feel so blessed, blessed to see her lungs working, blessed to see her chubby cheeks and big lips we can't wait to kiss. Blessed to know that she is gaining lots of weight, blessed to know my fluids are up. Blessed to know she is doing well, blessed to know she is healthy.  Blessed beyond belief to have her!

Told family and friends?:  Yes

Pregnancy Thoughts

Pregnancy is not for sissies.
It is hard, and stressful, and sometimes just plain exhausting.
You don't feel like yourself, you don't look like yourself, and sometimes, you definitely don't act like yourself.
There are days that are harder than others and stress levels rise as patience drops.
There are nights where sleep is uncomfortable and hard to come by.
There are moments when you cry for no reason, or just sit and daydream about what your little bundle will look or act like.

Pregnancy is emotionally so, so hard.  From the moment we found out about our Little S, our minds and hearts have constantly been filled with worry.  I never knew how much my parents worried about me, but I never expected to worry this much.  It gets tiring and makes the days drag on.  It makes the lump in your throat form when you see your doctor's number on the caller ID.  Pregnancy makes you hormonal and emotional...a double edged sword...husbands know.

Pregnancy brings fear, fear for your baby, fear that you will never get your pre-baby body back, fear that you won't be good enough or that you will fail as a parent.

Pregnancy is a time to forget yourself, your pant size, your comfort, and realize that you are doing something much greater for someone that you never thought you could love so much.  It is a time to remember how blessed we are.

Pregnancy is a time above all else, to be thankful.

Thankful for the kicks that keep you up at night or the pounds that congregate.
Thankful for the ability your body has to create something so wonderful.
Thankful for the backaches that mean your little one is growing.
Thankful for your husband who shows you just how much he loves not only you, but your sweet little angel.
Thankful for technology and wonderful Doctors that take such good care of us.
Thankful for the ability to create life.
Thankful for the tiny diapers and socks.
Thankful for the sweet blessing inside you.

As I move into the "uncomfortable stage," I know it is going to get harder and harder to appreciate the little things about pregnancy like the kicks and hiccups, but I have promised myself (and made Josh promise me too) that I won't let myself lose sight of this beautiful gift of being pregnant.  I know I will miss it.  That makes me so sad because I still feel like we are staring at that second pink line that cold, February night.  The time flew.  And it is still flying.  And I know without a doubt in my mind, that even though I cannot wait for our little girl's arrival, I will miss being pregnant.

So, for the last 9 weeks this go-around, this Momma will be trying her hardest to be thankful for all the aches and pains, thankful for our Little S and the miracle that she is in our lives.  We know and realize over and over every day that she is a sweet gift from our Heavenly Father and feel so blessed that He has chosen us to be her parents.

Each day that passes is one more day that she gets to grow and become stronger.  Each day is a blessing, even though each day the aches get achier and the pains get more painful.

Sweet Little S, you are so worth it.

29 Weeks:)

How far along?: 29 Weeks!
Weight gain/loss: Up 14 lbs. as of last week
Symptoms: Heartburn that comes and goes, rib pain, and backache.  She is so worth it though!
Maternity clothes?:  Still just tops and my tummy sleeve...I have started to feel like something's gotta give...preferably not the seams on my clothes, maybe it is time to ditch my jean size? :( We will see...
How is the sleep?:  I get the occasional leg cramp, but lately the thing that really keeps me from sleeping is waking up and feeling her moving around, sometimes it tickles, sometimes it is just nudges, and sometimes she has sweet little hiccups, that is the real kicker because it doesn't stop for 10+ minutes! :)  Try sleeping after that!
Best moment this week?: Watching the Olympics with my frozen bag of peas:)  Little S was doing the uneven bars in my tummy to support the U.S. :)
Told family and friends?:  Yes
Miss anything?: My abs still, and I think I will add breathing normally...Okay, I guess doing most things normally, putting on my shoes, getting out of bed, fitting into clothes...
Movement?:  She gets hiccups at least 3-4 times a day and I LOVE IT!  They are the sweetest!  Along with hiccups, she likes to wedge herself right in my pelvis, her shoulders on one hip and her feet on the other, they she straightens out and makes me feel like I am going to break in half.  Okay, I'm not sure that is exactly what she is doing, but that's what it feels like:)  My ribs, pelvis, and her have a love/hate relationship...
Cravings?:  Fruit, wild berry bagels (For one, that is soo not me, I have a deep-rooted belief that fruit and bagels should not touch, weather the fruit is in the cream cheese or the bagel itself, no bueno. Little S on the other hand does not agree...) and french dip sandwiches, I nearly started drinking the juices out of the crock pot before it was even done!  Here I am drooling just thinking about the leftovers for tonight...
Anything make you queasy or sick?:  The heat...
Have you started to show yet?:  Yes
Gender:  Sweet baby GIRL!
Any labor signs?:  Still nothing serious, just some good 'ole Braxton Hicks
Belly button in or out?: Out
Any "pregnancy" moments?:  Emotions are a whole new ballgame right now...poor Josh takes the brunt of it, but even though I seem to cry over everything, he just does anything to make me happy again:)  Thanks sweetie:)
Looking forward to:  Oh goodness, I found THE most precious hats for the hospital/this winter!  They are being shipped as we speak and I can't wait for them to get here!  Also, my birthday, Maternity pictures in the upcoming weeks, our next ultrasound in 3 weeks, and last but not least: MEETING OUR LITTLE S!

27 Weeks, and HUGE Nursery Update!

How far along?: 27 Weeks!  Little S is TWO whole pounds!
Weight gain/loss: up 11 lbs. as of two weeks ago, official weigh-in next Monday...
Symptoms: This week we hit a wall and had a whole slew of new symptoms:(  Backache like I have been having, heartburn, splitting headaches, and rib pain...but she is SO worth it.  It is incredible how much you can love someone and sacrifice so much when you haven't even met!
Maternity clothes?:  Oh yes, just tops and tummy sleeve...debating weather to cave and buy some pants...
How is the sleep?:  Still sleeping great!
Best moment this week?: Josh coming home from work and after a hug and a kiss for me, a kiss and a raspberry on my tummy for Little S:)  And realizing this is my last week of the second trimester!  Home stretch here we come!
Told family and friends?:  Yes
Miss anything?: Still just miss using my abs
Movement?:  Lots and lots!  I woke up the other night and as I was falling asleep thought "why can I feel my heartbeat in my tummy?"  Then I realized it was her sweet hiccups and just laid there with my hand on my stomach feeling the little thump, thump, thump...falling asleep to her hiccups was wonderful:)
Cravings?:  Anything cinnamon, and fruit!
Anything make you queasy or sick?:  Lately, I have been waking up feeling sick so I just grab a couple crackers and feel just fine until breakfast:)
Have you started to show yet?:  Yes
Gender:  Sweet baby GIRL!
Any labor signs?:  Braxton Hicks nothing scary though
Belly button in or out?: Starting to poke out!
Any "pregnancy" moments?:  Working on the nursery like a crazy woman!  Tearing up in the car for no apparent reason...more on that later.
Looking forward to:   Scheduling our 3D ultrasound next week!

And now, for the nursery update!
This is my view from down the hall into Little S's room:

I just love seeing color up on the walls!
Now for the crib, we are still in love with the white crib we found weeks ago, so adding color is easy and lots of fun!

Her initials will be S.J.P...obviously, but I started monogramming, and painted the little love birds from an idea I found on Pinterest.  The top frame holds a paisley pattern I fell in love with.

See that Bird Mobile?
I drool at it!  Found the tutorial HERE, it is pretty self explanatory, but I just picked out some scrap fabric I had collecting dust and using THIS TEMPLATE, I traced the bird shapes.  Cut those shapes out, and then sew them up leaving the raw edge out.  I found it easiest to sew them together by first starting with the sides and sewing them to the belly, then sew on the top of the head, then stuff them and stitch up from the back of the neck, to the tail feathers.

Love it:)
Then, Josh's mom so kindly offered to make the bedding for the crib, way too nice of her!  She does amazing work with the sewing machine and I can't believe how beautiful the bedding turned out!

I swoon over those silly birds on the fabric:)  They look so happy!

Speaking of Josh's mom...

Yep, she made the car seat cover as well!  She is good!
And for the changing table/dresser/bookshelf wall:

We have had this dresser for a while and weren't using it for anything besides holding a lamp and some vases, so Josh brought it down the stairs one night all by himself:)  Then after three coats of white paint and lots of ventilation, I turned it from black to white!

The changing pad cover is found HERE, mine is the changing pad in coral, she also does nursing or boppy pillow covers and has tons of colors to choose from. Shipping was fast, the quality seems really good, and the price was well worth it!

Remember when I used to paint?  Forever ago? Well I broke out the paints again last week and painted some poppies to brighten up the wall above the changing pad.  Still deciding what else to hang up there, but this was a good start!
In the basket next to the changing pad, I put some lotion, A&D ointment, and a jar to hold Q-tips, leaving just enough space to put some diapers in the basket as well:)

Josh's parents also had a rocking chair they weren't using, so they so kindly gave it to us!
And white it became:)

Did you see that banner hanging  above the window?
It was so easy!  Just cut out some triangles from fabric or paper, sew along the outside edges, and arrange them in the pattern you want.
I found some 2.5" thick ribbon and folded the edges in to the center line, then folded it in half again and ironed it.  Tuck the triangles into the fold where you want them and pin each one in place leaving enough space on each end to tie up.  Then sew along the open edge of the ribbon to secure the triangles.

And to hang behind the rocking chair:

Like the song!  My parents always sang that to us and can't wait to sing it to Little S:)
One thing that has a little corner of my heart is the bassinet my dad made for me and my siblings to sleep in as newborns:

I can't wait for our little girl to use it too!  It will be perfect until she is big enough and graduates to her crib:)

And last but not least, some of my favorite outfits we have found:

I die over the little jeggings!  Her bum really will be that small?! :)

Whew!  I am out of breath from typing.
The nursery still has a long way to go, but I am so glad to be preparing already!
We feel so blessed to be in the position to prepare for her arrival, yesterday I was driving home from getting groceries and couldn't help but break down and tear up from feeling so blessed to have our little one on the way!  We can't wait!

I hope you all have a wonderful week!

How far along?:23 Weeks:)
Weight gain/loss: 7lbs.+
Symptoms: I have felt pretty darn good lately, I have had some round ligament pain, Braxton Hick's, and a backache...but feeling good!

Told family and friends?:  Yes
Miss anything?:  Not much!  Feeling so lucky for our little girl!
Any movement?:  Lots and lots! My mom and sister Abi both felt kicks for the first time!  And I felt hiccups for the first time.  The other night I was laying down feeling around trying to get her to move, and noticed that to one side of my belly button, there was a really hard lump, her HEAD!  So fun to be able to feel her in there when she's not moving!
Cravings?:  Taco salad, cinnamon rolls, and pineapple again!
Anything make you queasy or sick?:  Being hungry, go figure.
Have you started to show yet?:  Yes
Gender:  Sweet baby GIRL!
Any labor signs?:  Some Braxton Hick's, but nothing bad this week thank heaven!
Belly button in or out?:  Oh man, the top half pokes out, the bottom half is barely in...I think weekly belly button pictures would be just as entertaining as weekly bump pictures...
Any "pregnancy" moments?:  This week was scorching here in Idaho, there were a few days that I would feel 1000 degrees and be panting like a dog, so I would stand in front of a fan and eat a Popsicle, but before I could finish, I had the shivers and was running for a jacket.  I told Josh about it and he said: "so this is were the fun really starts!"
Looking forward to:  Camping tomorrow, more movement and decorating the nursery!

Pillowcase Dresses!

A few days ago, I found THIS  tutorial for making a little girl's dress from fat quarters and decided to try it out.  They provide a sizing guide so you can dress your little one at many different ages:

So, I made this dress:

And fell in love:)
So today, I wanted to make another, but with only two panels-one for front and one for back.
I used the chart above for the bottom panels (see tip below) and figured that for a dress for 6-12 months with only two panels, I would need two 13"X13" squares, two bottom panels, and one tie for around the neck.

Then to make the arm holes, I used the measurements provided (below) and cut out the four corners on the 13"X13" pieces to create arm holes.  The measurements for a 6-12 month dress were 3" across the top and 3 1/2" down the side.

Then the front and back panels should both look like this:

So now, fold where you just made your cuts in 1/4" and iron in place.

Then fold them over another 1/4", iron, pin, and sew in place.  Do this for all four arm hole diagonals.

Then for the casing for the tie around the neck, fold the top down 1/2", iron, and fold down another 1".  Iron, pin and sew into place.

Now take the bottom panel and with right sides facing each other, pin in place at the bottom of the front and back panels.

I used a 3/8" seam, then finished the seam with a zig zag stitch.

For the bottom hem, I could not for the life of me, understand how they made it work with their measurements, so I modified the measurements and folded the bottom hem up 1", ironed, folded up another 1", ironed, pinned, and sewed into place.

When the hem was finished, I went back over the bottom panels and finished them off with a topstitch.  Mine measured at 1/8".

We are so close!  Now take your front piece and back piece and with right sides facing together, pin into place and sew down the sides with a3/8" seam again, finishing with zig zag stitches along the sides.

Flip the dress right side out and it should look something like this:

The tie is pretty self explanatory (see measurements below), but I took my long piece of fabric and cut the ends off at diagonals, folded all edges over 1/4", ironed, folded over another 1/4", ironed, pinned, and sewed into place.  Then thread the tie through the casing and you are done!

I cannot wait until our little girl can run around in these!

Now for the tips and adjustments I made:

-For the bottom panels, I used pieces that were 5"X13"...I cannot figure out what they did with pieces that were 22" long, so if you figure it out, clue me in please!

-The arm measurements are as follows:
3m-12m 3" across top, 3 1/2" down sides.
12m-2T 3 1/2" across top, 4" down sides.
3T-4T 3 1/2" across top, 4 1/2" down sides.
5T-6T 3 1/2" across top, 5" down sides.

-The tie measurements that I used were 54"x4". The fat quarter dress that I made first had a thinner tie than I had hoped for, so I made it a little thicker and longer for the brown dress.

If you have any questions, let me know!
Hope you all have a wonderful day!
Meg
